Volunteering Opportunities

We love volunteering and if you join our team, we know you'll love it too!

It doesn’t matter if you don’t have any ‘Scouty skills’, you don’t have to work with the kids, and you don’t have to be around every week. Whatever you can give, we would love to have you on board.

Check out the different ways you can get involved below, or email us on 5thbournemouthscoutgroup@gmail.com to ask us any questions.

Beaver Team Member

When? – Mondays 18:00 – 19:00

Learn more about joining the fun with our 6 – 8 year olds

Young people love to build dens. But it’s not just about how much fun they have, or the amazing memories they make. They’re learning to work together, think for themselves and play their part. As a part of the Beaver Team, you can use your skills to help young people find theirs, while learning new ones for yourself. (Oh, and it’s really fun too!)

Not required: Scouty skills, experience or knowledge.

Required: A big smile, a willingness to get stuck in and maybe a readiness to sweep the hall every now and
then!

Some things you could get involved with:

  • Running activities
  • Playing games
  • Taking the register
  • Tidying up after messy Beavers!
  • Keeping on top of which badges have been earned
  • Ordering badges
  • Setting up resources and equipment for activities (a fancy way of saying getting out the glue and pencils!)

If you can spare a night a week or a night a month, then we want you to join our Beaver Team and help give our 6 – 8 year olds skills for life.

Cub Team Member

When? – Mondays 18:30 – 20:00

See if joining our team for 8 – 10.5 year olds is for you

Would you like the chance to canoe, climb and make bird boxes while improving your CV? As a member of the Cub Team, you’ll do all of this and more, using your current skills and learning new ones.

Enthusiasm, an empathy with young people and a sense of humour are a must. But we can teach you the rest. We’ll support you all the way and ensure you get the training and resources you need to help plan and run our weekly activities.

Some tasks you could get involved with are:

  • Taking the register
  • Helping the Cubs to have fun!
  • Getting out equipment
  • Moving tables
  • Sending communications to parents
  • Accompanying weekend trips
  • Camping (if you’re up for it!)

If you can spare a night a week or a night a month, then you can join our Cub Team and help give our 8 – 10 ½ year olds skills for life.

Scout Team Member

When? – Mondays 19:15 – 21:00

Get stuck in with our 10.5 – 14 year olds

Can you tie knots? Me neither!

We’re looking for someone who can encourage our young people to take that leap, make that jump, get up and
carry on regardless. From map reading to crate stacking, it’s all about having the confidence to give it a go.

Some of the tasks you could get involved with are:

  • Improving how we work with parents
  • Keeping on top of who has earned which badges
  • Running weekly activities
  • Helping our Patrol Leaders and their Assistants with their responsibilities
  • Talking to the Cub team to help Cubs move up to Scouts smoothly

If you can spare a night a week or a night a month, then you can join our Scout Team and help give our 10 ½ –
14 year olds skills for life.

Group Trustee

When? – Meetings once a term, flexible around the needs of the Trustees

Working with kids not for you? Then become a Trustee

The Trustee Board oversees the administration of the Group. As well as a Chair and Treasurer, our Board welcomes people with specific skills, and representatives of Beaver, Cub and Scout parents.

We will meet three or four times a year, but effective members will volunteer for tasks in between the meetings, helping to ensure the smooth running of the Group and maximising its potential for a hugely positive impact on its young members.

You don’t need to have been on a Board before, or have any Scouting experience. We’re just looking for a group of people with young people’s best interests at heart.

Group Chair

When? – Meetings once a term, flexible around the needs of the Trustees

Fancy working behind the scenes and making decisions?

Scouting relies on strong leadership. So if you can motivate others, keep a cool head and balance a variety of views then you would be an ideal Chairperson for 5th Bournemouth Scouts. With experience of steering meetings to produce excellent decisions, you’ll be equally willing to speak your mind as encouraging others to express their views.

You’ll use your strong communication skills to help a team of committed adult volunteers, who make up the Trustee Board, arrive at a good decision that will benefit young people. Able to work as part of a team, you will also contribute to the direction and development of the Group.

No previous experience of Scouting is necessary. What’s more important is your own skills and experience, as well as empathy with our mission and values. We will provide all appropriate training and ongoing support and you won’t be alone, you’ll be working in a team of others all making decisions together.

If you want to give it a go, then let us know!

Admin Support

When? – About an hour a week (unless you’re quicker than that!), from the comfort of your own home

Can you use a computer? Great, you’re in!

Our volunteers who work with the young people want to do just that; work with the young people. We’re looking for someone (or a team of people!) who can support our ‘frontline’ volunteers by doing the background bits.

Whether it’s responding to emails from parents or making sure everyone’s emergency details are up to date, the role of the Admin Support is key in the smooth running of our Scout Group. You don’t have to be involved with the young people to take on this role and you can do it from home, in your own time, while making a massive contribution.

Our systems are already set up and we’ll give you all the training that you need, all you have to do is give it a go.

Fundraising Team

When? – Whenever you have time to find a fundraising opportunity and pull a team together to make it happen!

Know where to find some money? Or want to give it a go?

To keep our activities alive and our Group going we need a team of people to help with fundraising. You don’t have to have any experience but you do have to be ready to get stuck in and give it a go!

We already have fundraising opportunities available, we just need people to help us make sure they run smoothly (but if you have any extra ideas that would be great too!)

If you think you could help out then we’d love to hear from you.
